The gaming world has lost one of its true founding fathers. David Rosen, the visionary co-founder who spent more than three decades at the helm of SEGA, passed away at his home in the Hollywood Hills, California, on December 25, 2025, at the age of 95.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1930, Rosen served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and remained in Japan following his service. Recognizing the potential of post-war commercial entertainment, he launched Rosen Enterprises in 1954, initially running photo studios and exporting art before pivoting to import coin-operated amusement machines from the US to Japan in 1957.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1965, Rosen Enterprises merged with Nihon Goraku Bussan (also known as Service Games) to create Sega Enterprises Ltd., deriving the iconic name SEGA from the first two letters of SErvice GAmes. Taking the reins as Chairman and CEO, Rosen led the company into original game production. In 1966, SEGA released Periscope, a groundbreaking submarine simulation arcade machine that became an international sensation, helping popularize arcade culture worldwide and establishing the classic 25-cent play standard in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond developing hit games, Rosen helped structure the entire Japanese arcade landscape, establishing the Japan Amusement Association and serving as its inaugural chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even through multiple corporate shifts and ownership changes, Rosen remained a driving force behind the company. In 1984, alongside Hayao Nakayama and backed by investor Isao Okawa, Rosen helped buyout SEGA from Paramount Pictures. He went on to lead Sega of America and manage overseas operations while serving on SEGA’s board of directors until his retirement in 1996. His leadership over thirty years laid the groundwork for the modern video game industry, leaving behind an incredible legacy that transformed arcade and console gaming forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
